It's called 'small talk.' He was trying to show interest in an employee.

If he is someone you do not talk to socialy and as a president he has probably been trained to ask about your personal life to seem more "realatable", that may be the only thing he could think of at the time. It's just something they teach you in business classes to make you seem more down to earth, but usaully just makes the unrealatable mor unrealateable.
