it's simple really do you approve of self harm??

2006-11-09 08:47:19 · 5 answers · asked by Natie 2 in Social Science Psychology

okay. simple i meant this basically:
1) that if some one you loved hurt themselves would you make them promise not to then get mad if they still did.
2) suicide by cutting is suicide,
but cutting or other self harm to relieve stress without the intent to kill yourself is another.

3) yes i do kno quite a few ppl with this problem most of them close friends except for one, anyways anyone have any input on the promise thing??
The point of it (not to take one side to this) is to relieve stress, until it comes back and then you do it agin.

I don't think your "simple" question is really that. Self harm, is often a result a any number of mental disorders and other problems.

I do not approve of self harm, it is something that has resulted in the suicide of many friends and injury to many others. (Including myself)

My honest answer to this is this:

"Self harm is absolutely bloody stupid"

To me, self harm might be stress relief, but then again so is probably killing another person. But it's the wrong way to go about it. If you need stress relief, you go for a massage or you punch a wall, you might even just shout into a pillow or just take a bath, but i think self harm is the lazy man's way out, it's just a way to relieve stress as well as asking for attention, but there are many other, better ways.

If you're stupid enough to self harm to 'relieve stress' then you don't have an ounce of my sympathy if you cut something important and die in a public toilet.

I think that our approval is irrelevent to whether people will harm themselves or not. To be honest, I think everyone should have the right to do to themselves what they will. As such, I don't mind either way if someone wants to harm themselves or not.

That said, if it was one of my relatives who was committing self-harm, I would do my best to put a stop to it, since I feel that it accomplishes nothing. It strikes me as a terrible waste for someone to do that.

But, generally speaking, I think that people should be allowed to do as they will; for that reason, I don't think that drug use in the safety of one's home should be illegal, nor should suicide.

Of course I do not approve of it but I do understand why people do it. If you or someone you know is cutting or otherwise, please look into seeing a therapist at a community mental health center.
