How did they add complicated ,unheard words and a rich vocabulary to their writings?

how good ur writing is dusnt entirely depend upon whether u use big complicated words or not, they cud've just used better metaphors, symbols and other things

In the 'old times' authors, at least the ones remembered today, were very talented in their work and knew how to make their works perfect without help from an outside source.

They were intelligent. Who uses a thesaurus to beautify their work anyways? You either have it or you do not.

My guess would be that they themselves were well read, and that the words they used, though "unheard" of today, were used in speech and writing of their own time and social circle.

well, i know that most of them were smart and good in may things and well in the renesance they start mostly doing better. mean who wouldnt get his vocabulary better after the inferno or decameron or something....
