If the man is the only one working then naturally he is financially the head of the household. If they both work then it becomes a non issue, unless the man still makes significantly more than his wife.

Well I am a single mom, and I have been for many years, so I am not sure why people think that a man should be the head of household financially. Yes I agree that kids need their mothers love, but they do get that still when the mom works. I think that men just like the fact that they can almost try and say they are the "MAN" of the house. I really can't give you any real good reason's except for the mom spending time with the kids.

If the wife is unable to contribute to the household for some reason (illness is all that comes to mind at the moment), or if religious considerations require the man to be head of the household.

Tough question; I can't think of any other reasons.

Men and women can be head of the household in different aspects.
Relationships do not tend to work well if one partners is dominant in all areas.
Men tend to be (in average, not each individual) slightly better in quantitative disciplines, such as math, accounting, etc. Managing household finances falls into this category.

Mind you though, my mom runs the finances in my parents household, I run those in mine though.

If a man is running the households finances, the woman can for example be the driving force behind the couple's social schedule (something that someone good at maths would not automatically be).

Financially, I am the head of the household. I have a job and earn income. My wife does not. She stays at home and takes care of our daughter.

We don't do this because we have some morbid propensity towards social norms of the 1950s. We do this because I have been at my company for years and earn enough to allow her to stay home and take care of our little girl. My wife hasn't finished school and has not worked her way up a corporate ladder the way I have. She would not earn near what my salary is.

If my wife found a job that paid more money than mine, I would quit in a second and stay home to be the one to raise our daughter.

There are several reasons, the validity of which is debated such as in your class.
Consider the marriage itself. A man's ego needs care. If he doesn't feel like a man it will hurt the marriage relationship. It's similar to a woman needing to feel fulfilled. A man has those needs met differently. If he cannot take care of his family, he feels like a real loser. If she earns more income than he does, he can feel like she is competing with him rather than helping him. Also, if she earns more money than he, she can start bossing him around thinking that she earned the right to do so with a bigger paycheck. There is another problem. With two incomes, they are more likely to be territorial over their money. He says it's my money so I can do as I please. She says the same thing. If there is only one income, they have no choice but to share and work together. He cannot say that it is his money. He has to think of his family's needs.
These characteristics do not occur with everyone. They are just the main reasons. Note that most of this is not logical, but rather is psychological.
Aside from that if there are two incomes, you have to know whether or not you are actually spending more than you are earning to keep the job. If you have to pay for childcare, then both spouses have to earn enough to cover the childcare costs. If not, the result is that you are paying more for childcare than you are earning. You better feel pretty good about that job or quit and save money by staying home. Pay yourself instead of another to be with your children. In this specific case it is a matter of econimics rather than psychology.
There are more arguments, but I will leave them to someone else.

If the man is level-headed concerning finances, he should be the head of the household concerning finances because... just in case something happens that causes a financial turmoil (extreme amount of hospitalization bills for example), men generally deal with stress better than women... women are generally more emotional & are more likely to fold, under extremely stressful situations.

From the evolutionary standpoint, females normally invest their time heavily into rearing kids, so in a monogamous couple it leaves the male to go out, forage for sustenance and bring home the dough. From the social standpoint, it's still more traditional for a male to be providing financially, although it's slowly changing; but on the average, guys still make slightly more than women (for the same jobs), and guys are probably more likely to be selected for higher positions.

On a debate, men earn the higher percentage, of the household income. Which usually gives them the authority. In reality, women are just as powerful, for we've learned the fundamentals of success.

Do you mean in charge of all the finances? Or the primary bread winner?

I think making financial decisions should always be a joint venture. If anyone is more in the lead it should be whoever is more conservative with spending.

But bread winner - that's great if a guy can do that. It gives him a strong sense of self-worth which can spill over into treating the rest of the family well.
