Penicillin - from that discovery came everything else in medicine. Before it was developed, people died from the simplest infections because the drugs they had then were not adequate to cope. It saved countless lives in World War II and Fleming, Chain and Florey received a Nobel Prize for their work.

The Birth Control Pill. NO doubt about it. Safe, reliable, easy contraception made it possible for women to enjoy sex without fear of pregnancy and to do completely reliable family planning. I don't have any doubt that without the Pill, there would have been no women's liberation movement.
I know there are other medical advances that have been important, but in terms of the changes that it's made to our society, I can't think of any other medical discovery that has made such a difference.

The discoveries are all relevant but I woul say DNA.
The benefits are in it's infancy and the unknown potential from this important breakthrough is yet to be discovered. It will be the lynch pin for the erradication of many genetic diseases.

That is 1950 and I would say the two men men (whose names I can't recall) discovered DNA. Because of the use of DNA testing, people are set free who have been in jail for crimes they didn't commit and criminals have been caught that otherwise wouldn't have been. Now we are mapping all the genes. Let us hope this great discovery doesn't backfire on us in the future.

Don't mean to be pedantic - but penicillin was more than 50 years ago! I'd definitely go with the AIDS one - although we can't cure it we know how it spreads and how to control the effects of it. Millions must've been saved by this knowledge.
