Because there will be lots of loose new fibres and if you walk on it for a couple of weeks they will sink in - if you vacuum it you will remove them all the take a bit of strength away from the carpet. That's what my grandmother told me anyway!

Carpet relies on knots, now usually machine made. Until the fibre has had a chance to bed in to the format, the knots could loosen and be undone by suction, therefore leaving holes. Probably okay to hoover cheapo synthetic carpet which is basically glued, but a decent wool carpet should be allowed to settle in. Yes it will produce fluffballs, but you can brush these off.

Na this statement is definitely incorrect. As long as it's been laid by a good carpet fitter it's fine to hoover straight away otherwise you'll end up with fibres been trailed all around the house.

I thought you were meant to hoover it straight away beacuse of all the loose fibres and just checked and found this :
Vacuum a new carpet from day one. It will shed a certain percentage of loose fibres from manufacture and regular vacuuming is the best way to remove it. Do remember to check the dust bag after each session.

In addition to other answers, depending on the type of pile of the carpet you can clog up the vacuum cleaner if you excessively clean the carpet straight away. If the carpet is laid on an underlay base and properly stretched it should not affect the carpet.

Hi
When I install carpet in customer homes we always vacuum the carpet as the last step. It sounds like they just didn’t want to vacuum it.

Because all the fluffy pile comes out. They say it is best to let the carpet settle for a couple of days and then vacuum.
