I got caught shoplifting from a retail store by an undercover detective. I was put on citizen's arrest and had to wait there handcuffed until the police showed up. I have a clean reocrd so they gave me a citation and banned me from goin to that store for a year. I have a court date next month. The thing i stole was under $ 100.00, I'm scared and dont know what to expect. What will happen to me as far as trying to get a job, this is a misdemeanor what are the chances of me finding a good job. Will i go to jail?for how long. I dont have a job to pay for this can I do community service instead? What will happen if I'm on probation? HAS THIS HAPPENED TO ANYONE.......Can anyone who has got caught in a similar case like mine help i'd really appreciate it.

You won't go to jail. Most likely they will sentence you with a fine and community service. If you are a minor, your record will be sealed. If not, it will look bad in a background check, but shoplifting is not a huge crime, so if that is all that is on your record, you can probably still find a good job.

Would've been less costly to just pay for it, huh?

If you have the ability to get a good lawyer, do so. They should be able to negotiate a lesser charge possibly resulting in no record at all. If you do end up with a misdemeanor it will depend on the company policy if they want to hire you. Since your charge involved theft, most retail, banking or any jobs that deal with cash or other peoples finances will be hard to get.

It sounds like you're over 18. I got busted a couple times (out of thousands) when I was like 15. No handcuffs, no drama, just a rent-a-pig walking me to the back and calling the real pigs. I got 6 months probation and my parents sent me to a shrink...lol. But obviously that's not on my record now. I think if you're an official adult you'll have to cite this on all your future job apps, which definitely sucks.

Since what you stole was not over $500 your not in major trouble. The citation, community service, possibly probation. And of course your parents, they are scarier than court.

when i was a teen i used to shoplift until one time i got caught and i never attempted it again. i was put on juvinile probation and got community service. it was so embarrassing being handcuffed and dragged off to jail. just dont do it again. i know it sounds tempting but one way or another you will pay for it. good luck.

Think about this. If you were an employer would you want to hire someone who you know steals things? I know I wouldn't.
Especially if you want a job in retail or other goods, but even in an office setting, companies lose a LOT of money from employee theft. Why hire someone that will make you lose more if you could prevent it??
