it refers to a distance when trying to get somewhere. When you are traveling, you have to take into account topography changes, going around obstacles and all that when measuring distance. All these things add to the actual distance you are from your point of itnerest. Since the shortest distance between any two points is a straight line, birds are the only things that can get away from obstacles (there arent any in the air). So the phrase refers to how far away something is if you were to measure a straight line from here to there, without taking into account anything else, such as obstacles.

It means in a straight line from point A to point B. Crows don't have to stick to roads and are not affected by terrain, therefore the shortest distance between two points is "as the crow flies"

It means in a straight line from point A to point B -- when there are no roads straight there. For example -- you ask me how far is it from Bob's house to Mark's house. If you drive a car and follow the streets - it is 3.5 miles, but 'as the crow flies' (like if you could just zoom straight there) it is only 2 miles. Get it? :)

Yes, it's the straight line distance between to points i.e. crows (and all birds) fly in a straight line.
Real question is, why is it "as the CROW flies"? Why not sparrow, eagle, albatross etc.....

THINK OF A CROW FLYING, IT WILL BE IN A STAIGHT LINE, THEREFORE IT MEANS FROM POINT A TO POINT B THE FASTEST WAY IS A STRAIGHT LINE, LIKE WHEN THE CROW FLIES.

It refers to a direct distance between two places, rather than a distance measured by roads or a distance to be travelled by going around obstacles such as rivers or gorges.

it refers to the direct straight line distance between two points, as opposed to the driving distance, which would not usually be a straight line
