I think you are speaking of the novels by Henry Gregor Felsen, such as Hot Rod, Street Rod, Crash Club, and Boy Gets Car (later called Road Rocket)--though I admit it's been too long ago for me to remember the color!

Felsen, born in Brooklyn, settled in Iowa, served as a Marine in WWII, and wrote many books. I think he finished Hot Rod in two weeks. In the early days of paperbacks for teenagers (I think they were called Bantam Pathfinders), it became a best seller among teenage boys in the 1950s and 1960s. His books had authentic info about cars and fast driving but shocking endings, designed to promote safe driving by frightening the bejeebers out of young readers.

The only book I recall that sounds like this was called "Boy Gets Car". Pink hotrod with copper plated wheels..etc. Don't recall the authors name, sorry.
