I will culture bacteria on a petri dish using agar gel. I will be viewing bacteria under a microscope and taking a digital picture to determine the amount of growth by looking at the area. The bacteria will likely grow in a not so uniform shape. Are there any programs or techniques out there that could easily determine the area of bacteria that grows? I will use this as comparison for a project.

Print off the picture, cut out all areas that bacterial growth is observed and using a sensitive balance scale weigh the paper that has bacterial growth on it. Works pretty good.
