I been reading a lot lately about finding your true self. How do I know what is really my true self or just a reaction to either a current person's feeling or something someone said years ago. For example, if someone at one point said, "You're funny" how do I know that being funny now is part of the real me or just a reaction to what that person said so many years ago?

We are all the collective experiences. You are not the same self you were 5 years ago. That self has changed, mutated, evolved - into the self you are now.

Every bit of input, all your experiences, all your thoughts and everything you read, eat, touch, see, hear and smell change you to a greater or lesser degree.

Only YOU can say if you are faking something, putting on a mask to cover your "true self". If you are horribly shy, yet force yourself to be outgoing and social - you are covering up the "true self", but this is something you do with effort and are aware as you do so.

If you want to learn more about yourself, ask yourself questions - "What is my favorite color?" "If money was not an issue, where in the world would I like to live?"

Only you can answer these things. As for the image you project to the world - that is an entire different thing. Remember my "Shy but outgoing" example before? The world sees that person as "Outgoing and friendly" and probably would be shocked to find out that inside he/she is cringing with shyness.

Knowing your inner self is important. Knowing how you project yourself to others is equally important.

In ultimate solitude, begin to peel away the layers of the world like an onion. What's left is "you". Then, just for existentialistic jollies, peel that away and see what remains. That's where you'll find your answer. You can do it, also, by studying the calyx' of flowers. The sooner we peel ourselves away, the sooner we get on with the luscious truth of what we are really here for. The answers will surprise you. It's not about God. Or you. It's stunning what's really going on in the Universe. Seek solitude and peel away.

You just know. Your true self isn't just what others say about you, but what you believe about yourself. Your true self is a collection of your thoughts, feelings, behaviours, opinions, interests, talents, strengths, weaknesses etc. Whatever you love, whatever you do, whatever makes you happy. Whatever life means to you. If you had to describe yourself to someone who had never met you, all your qualities, the sum of who you are, what would you say? That is your self.
