can i collect fallen branches or trees from public woodlands for use as fire wood

You mean like from the national forests? You need a wood gathering permit. Get it at the district office. Probably same with other government agencies. Reason?? If you gather the fallen w/o a permit, why does the next guy need a permit to hack off a few branches?

Your not suppose to gather downed,or fallen wood from a state park. I'm not sure of a public area. If it's not a state park,and it's not posted, I would not worry about it. Call your local police and ask if it's against the law.

you need to look at the grants of rights at /of your local area ,mainly local councils,if a grant is given then its unlikely that the grant has been removed,you need to check it out before any removal,also if the woodland was to be part of some body's estate then you could be trespassing

If you like. Personally I would collect them and build a small fort. Access will be denied to anyone who doesnt know the password.
