As far as I am concerned, it should make NO difference what colour the victim of a crime is - they are all entitled to justice. I remember hearing about this case a couple of years ago and it made me sick to my stomach.
No I don't think it would have taken much longer. Look at the Antony Walker case - trial and convictions within a year.
What you have to remember is that the legal systems in England and Scotland do not always operate in the same way.
The lad's family got justice - as they should have. As, I stated earlier, should all victims of this type of crime regardless of what they look like.
Note - there still hasn't been a conviction in the Lawrence case. Maybe time for you to do a little fact checking...

The Stephen Lawrence case was handled appallingly badly by the police at the time. However things have moved on since then - I believe a conviction was brought about in the case of Anthony Walker, another racist killing where the victim was black and the perpetrator white.
Don't drag politics into the case of Kriss Donald, it was a truly brutal murder of a young man, a child really, (he was 15) who was stabbed and then burned to death.
"The gang took him on a 200-mile journey to Dundee and back while they made phone calls looking for a house to take him to.
Having no success, they returned to Glasgow and took him to the quiet Clyde Walkway, near Celtic FC's training ground.
There, they held his arms and stabbed him 13 times before dousing him with petrol and setting him alight while he may still have been alive. "
Murder is murder and needs to be punished no matter who the victim is.

After the Steven Lawrence case and Damilola Taylor Lessons were learnt by the police. And now I think that the police forces are now more clued up in handling Racial Crimes. And justice appears to be more swift.
I think the fact that the police had as a witness on of the perpetrators of this heinous crime helped to bring the culprits to court sooner rather than later.
What absolute animals they all were poor lad never stood a chance. And his poor friend has to live with his death for the rest of his life.
See to days report in the Scottish Daily Mail. Enough to make the blood boil.

Please do not turn this horrific crime to start a racial debate.
That poor kid was kidnapped, driven 200 miles across Scotland, held down whilst being stabbed 13 times, doused in petrol, set alight, and then dumped into a canal, probably dying a lonely death.
That is why those animals have been convicted.
Not because they are asian. Because they are killers, with no remorse for what they have done, because they planned it.
It said so in the paper.
There is only one racist element in this crime.
The asian guys had been verbally abused by some white youths earlier in the day, and instead of rising above it, they started to drive around looking for someone to take it out on.
That young lad was walking home with a mate, when they took him.
HE WAS FIFTEEN YEARS OLD!!! They are all in their late 20s!!
He didn't do anything to them, they were just pissed off.
I think it's disgusting what they did, and I hope they pay for it.
So do not use this as another excuse for "Everybody is racist towards asians" statement, because an innocent child has lost his life because he was white.
You should be ashamed of yourself!!

Its not that simple, people are still people irrelevant of their colour. Its about evidence and admittance. The stephen Lawrence case, although very flawwed the culprits never admitted their guilt. The guy who got killed while with his girlfriend at a bus stop was black, racist killing, but they was convicted as they was on cctv. The Police need concrete evidence for the courts to convict

The main thing is that they were caught and will spend the rest of their lives in jail where they belong. The scariest thing besides that Pollockshields is very close to where I used to live - the leader had been sentenced to 30 months for a previous violent offence - he served only 9 months. That is an indictment of the criminal justice system in Scotland.
Cathy Jamieson should resign.

What I think...is that until people stop LOOKING for things to scream 'RACIST' over...everything will seem biased even if it isn't. I'm SURE I could dig up ten cases where white men were on trial and were imprisoned within 2 years. One case doesn't represent all. I could give you ten examples of how whites are discriminated against, but I'm sure that wouldn't count. How long did the O.J. thing go on, for heaven sake? When you're talking about a crime like this one...it wasn't even committed by beings who qualified as 'human'. Race makes no difference when you're talking about rabid dogs.

Two years for a murder trial is not uncommon. Few criminal trials of that scope happen in less than a year, and 3-4 years is still not that far out of the ordinary, depending on the complexity of the case.

I think a lot of mistakes were made over the murder of Stephen Lawrence. I think the authorities have learned by this, therefore, 1don't agree colour was an issue in this case. Any murderer should be brought to justice even quicker than 2 years in my opinion. Irrespective of colour or race, Murder is murder.

I think 2 yrs is a long time. Sometimes when the crime was highly publicized they postpone trial in order to get a fair jury.
