I'm the mother of identical twins so I hear these types of questions alot.

No, twins in different sacs does NOT mean the will be fraternal.

1. Identical or monozygotic twins are from one egg that splits. Whether they are in seperate sacs or not depends on what day the egg splits. It's actually fairly common for identical twins to be in seperate sacs. Mine were.

2. Identical twins may or may not share the same placenta. It again depends on when the egg splits. I've met many mothers of twins who thought they had fraternal twins (because of two placentas) but it turns out that through DNA testing they found they were identical!

3. There is a 1 in 250 chance that a pregnancy could result in identical twins. Identical twins are a "fluke" of nature and are not influenced by fertility drugs, ethinicity, maternal age or family history.

4. There are also reasons besides fertility drugs that people can have fraternal twins. The higher the age of the mother the higher the chance of producing two eggs resulting in fraternal twins. Ethnicity can also play a role. Studies show that fraternal twins are more common in African American and Latino backgrounds and less common in Asians. Family history is also important. If there is a history of fraternal twins on the females side then there is an increased chance of a twin pregnancy.

I hope this helps!

Not necessarily... fraternal twins do always have their own sacs, but so do most identical twins. The fact that they are in seperate sacs is any no way a good indicator of whether or not they are identical or fraternal.
