Well, if you don't mind chaffing your ar*se and bits, then none at all is nice, unless in kit. I actually have briefs (in kit or long sweats, boxer briefs on occasion, if I have a meeting and want some degree of, er, tightness, and regular boxers for other times. And yes, on occasion, nothing between me and the world than trousers.
I do think that boxers are better for the old twig and berries. If nothing else, air can circulate. Some guys get rashes if all is held closely together in hot weather.

Briefs. Tried boxer briefs, too tight around my muscular legs; also the short legs tend to roll up and show through my pants. I wear boxers around the house, but definitely not under clothes--too big of a waist band, not support whatever, and they bunch up--might as well wrap a towel around me. Nice, well designed low rise briefs are my favorite--show off the package nicely and fit really comfortably--don't even know they are there under my pants if they fit well.
