...the doctors do, when you want to lighten your periods? Not to be gross, but I bleed for 6-7 days, and the first four days, it is a very heavy flow. And I go through a super absorbancy tampon in about an hour. Serious and mature answers please.

I am not on any pills right now, but they really haven't helped in the past...didn't slow or get them on time. In fact, I had a period for 3 months straight thanks to the depo shot.

Your periods may me naturally heavy. Birth control pills help lighten and regulate periods. They also have the side effects of blood clots and stroke especially if you are a smoker and a family history of cardiovascular events.

You could have endometriosis. This causes heavey periods with a lot of cramping. Sometimes doctors will do a dilletation and curretage---d and c. For that, your cervix is dilated and a sharp spoon shaped instrument is used to scrape away the lining of the uterus. The risks are the same as most surgeries including perforating the uterus and ending up unable to have children.

You could have fibroid tumors. Fibroid tumors are benign, often shrink after menopause and are sometimes left in and sometimes surgically removed.

Eating a balanced diet helps. Avoid caffeine and processed foods. Oil of evening primrose is helpful for female problems.

You really need to work with your doctor to find the cause and the solution.

You dont say if your on any kind of contraception method ie the pill or coil. If your not they may put you on a pill which will regulate your periods and nine times out of ten lighten them as well. To be honest though a lot of young women bleed heavily for up to ten days at a time. Good luck.

Depending upon your age and whether you smoke or not, the doctor may put you on one of the newer birth control pills. Also a dilatation and curettage may be necessary to find out why you are bleeding so heavily.

doctors will usually try to alter your periods hormonally first. even a "procedure" is a big step. I know someone who had this done and they dilate the cervix and scrape the uterine walls, but it didn't help her, she still had problems with heavy periods and endometriosis. it can also scar your uterus and make getting pregnant difficult. go for the drugs!!

Check Linda R's answer. Fibroid is the most probable one that causes heavy bleeding. You should go see your OBGYN
