There's one currently selling on ebay, with a day still to go and the bid is at £300! My girlfriend has a copy exactly the same in mint condition that was her mothers from when she was a little girl and we had no idea it was worth something.

Alarm bells. First of all it's your girlfriends book and maybe she would like to keep it due to the sentimental value? £300 does not go far these days, I would suggest holding on to it and put it in a vaccum bag to retain its condition. Hold off a good few years then contact an antique book store for information. London would be your best bet I would say. I would also declare it on your house insurance and keep it somewhere safe.

It all depends on the condition - especially whether it has an intact and mint condition dust jacket. If it has no dust jacket it isn't worth much. The easiest way to discover the present going rate is to do an ebay search for similar books and check what they finally sell for (not what some sellers are asking for them). Price is always determined by what amount a potential buyer is willing to pay! Also - what the book LOOKS like can be deceptive - one selling for a high amount on ebay might be a first edition - whereas the 2nd, 3rd and subsequent editions might look identical but are worth considerably less!

Check with the Sothbey's and Christie's websites. They have experts on everything. Also, check with several rare booksellers either in person or online and don't take the first offer. If the book is in such great shape and is a first edition, first printing it will be worth a lot more. Good Fortune!
