Now I am not talking about an animal with a outer shell (say for example like a turtle) but skin only. Is it a crocodile, elephant, rhinoceros, what? Not a homework question or anything, (I am in college… LOL) but just wondering?

Rhinoceros is the creature have the toughest skin.
If you read the book called ''JUST SO STORIES'' written by Rudyard Kipling go to the chapter ''HOW THE RHINOCEROS GOT HIS SKIN'' you will have the whole information,or go to the General Library at your any place then find that Title.

I'm not sure if thickest equates to toughest, but the Rhinoceroses has the thickest skin of any terrestrial mammal.

I think some species of whale. Their skin is super dooper thick! They can get bitten really bad by a shark, and not even bleed!
