It depends on what kind of laptop. I know that many Dells at least can't be upgraded. The best thing to do is to go to your computer's manufacturer's website and look up the information there.

since most of the major hardware components of the system are internal or integrated to the motherboard, it is not easy to upgrade a laptop, unless you know where to get the parts compatible with your computer and you know how to disassemble it.
It is a different case in desktops because the expansion cards can easily be removed from the slots.
hope this helps!

on the hardware part you can, but not as easy as you would upgrade a desktop.
as far the software is concerned, upgrading is just as easy (provided that you have the minimum system requirements for Vista)

depends on what exactly you want to upgrade?
Software or Hardware??
As someone answered...software upgrading is very easy and as far as hardware you want to upgrade - for that you need to contact the manufacturer to check if your notebook can be upgraded for the hardware.....Most of the dell notebooks are upgradable.
Most of the time notebook users upgrade Memory and HDD to make it faster/spacious.....and that's not difficult at all.
And as far as Windows Vista is concerned
Check out this page if you have got one of these Dell notebooks ....for Vista compatility:
http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/solutions/en/vista_pcs?c=us&l=en&s=gen?
And also you can run Vista Readiness Advisor tool on Dell's following page to see if you notebook can be upgraded to Vista:
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/product_support/en/vista_test?c=us&l=en&s=gen
Hope this helps

I believe that you can. when they say that you can't upgrade your laptop i think what they mean is that you can't chance the video or sound card without changing the whole motherboard.

most of the dells can be upgraded since the CP i used to work for them for a few years. its usually just memory and pcmcia card type stuff (MDC modems, sometimes network). on the new ones they have modular video (you can upgrade the video) but thats dell i dont know about other companies.

it is better to just buy new.
the new hardware frequently is not as compatible as people say. You cannot just simple do plug and play with a new processor with an existing motherboard.
