I agree with Phoenix. The best way to address this is in private and very carefully as to not make it seem like you're attacking them. Especially if it's an older employee, their noses don't quite work as well as younger employees.

You should further explain that this issue has been brought to your attention & that you are looking out for the individual's best interest & would not like any chatter or complaints to continue. Sometimes body odor can exist because of a medical issue or the person not washing their clothing as often as they should - you can mention these possible reasons too. Make sure that your tone is gentle & that you come across as caring about this person's feelings. I have been in this situation before and these are techniques that have worked for me.

What I did was speak to the employee in private and told them that her colleagues and I were worried because we could detect an odd smell coming from her and we were concerned that there could a health problem that was causing this. I pointed out that we were asking this because we wanted to know if there were health issues could we could help with and that we were not trying to be offensive. This approach seemed to open up the conversation and I was able to talk about what she could do to elimate the odours. It could have had an adverse outcome but I was lucky that in this case things worked out. Such a hard thing to do.
