.
Just as in any Operating System,
and this includes W2K, you must have sufficient disk space for any function.

In order to solve this problem, you need to close or delete some hoggy programs.
FIRST, make sure that you are off the internet,
and also then you can exit your anti-virus protection to free up some disk space while you go to "manage".
NEXT copy any files and programs you don't use frequently to CD. Especially photos and games take up tons of MB....
then go to Add/Remove programs and delete any programs that you don't use. You can always reinstall them when you want from the CD.
You could get more free hard drive space by reducing the size of your virtual memory committment, but this should be restored when you are playing ram hoggy games.
MAKE SURE that you have exited all programs, including Word, Email, Adobe, games, and photo programs, etc.
Delete all temporary files.
Run Disk cleanup, and then
You can also DEFRAG your computer to condense files and free up HD space.

It sounds like you are out of space. Uninstall any apps you don't need and clean up your drive.

For apps go to the control panel and select the add remove programs. highlight and remove all apps you don't need - go through the whole list.

Next, clean out your Internet garbage. IN IE go to the tools and delete cookies, files, clear history. Then go to programs -> axccesories -> system tools -> disk cleanup and run it. delete all of the garbage it finds.

Last, go to your C drive and look for folders filled with junk (music, videos and graphics take up a ton of space so delete anything you have lost interest in). IF by chance you have a second partition (C Drive and a D drive not including CDs and temporary storage) move data/music to the D drive.

It would be a really good idea to defrag the drive once you have gone through all of this too since there will be a lot of gaps on your drive post process. The defrag is in the same area as the disk clean up.

You probably don't want to compress files. It will slow down your computer quite a bit. Disk Cleanup is showing you how much disk space it estimates would be freed if most files were compressed. But disk drives are so cheap it makes much more sense to get a new one than to slow your computer down. It's not hard to get a new drive and transfer everything to it. Most drives include the required software and detailed instructions. Then you can stop having to free up disk space.
