I'm applying for a job as a systems engineer, I have a very minimal idea of what the role entails (identifying and correcting problems with hardware and software). The job description is not very detailed, however in the interview i'm expected to explain what I have applied for and why, does anybody have any ideas?

This would be very dependent on the company, I'm sure... you should definitely make sure you check out their website and read as much as you can about what the company itself does. (This is good advice for *any* job).

The other thing I'd like to say is that I'm currently taking engineering at a Canadian university that offers a "systems" approach. We define that as being able to look at everything as parts of one big system, and not just individual bits. Perhaps this company expects you to understand how the hardware and software work together? Aside from that, "identifying and correcting problems" sounds like a tester or quality assurance engineer to me.

PS. You could always just say, "Actually, I was hoping you'd clarify that for me," and hope they give you points for guts. It really ought to be up to them to help you out with that.

PPS. I didn't read the whole thing, but wikipedia seems to have a good article on the topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Systems_engineer

Systems engineer is a fairly broad term, and it depends a bit on the company.

I was a systems engineer in my last job, and it entailed aything from desingning and building power distribution equipment to writing software to control a bar code scanner. I designed simulators for our systems that other vendors could use to interface with our systems, (hardware and software).

It was a marvelous job for a person who liked variety. I did plumbing, electrical work, prototyping, simulators, multiplexers and software to go along with all of this.

I'd be honest, and not try to flannel. I'd say it was the money or the freedom to develop my skills.
