I'm not trying to be offensive, but there is a lady in our community who is "slow" and very crosseyed. She doesn't know how to read and when I see her at the store, she has the cashier fill out her checks, so I'm pretty sure she can't write either. Should she be driving?

No. Many people seem to forget that driving is a privilege NOT a right. If you are too old, too short, too young, too drunk, or too stupid you should NOT be allowed to drive. It is not offensive to question this as it is about the safety of the entire community.

You can be illiterate and drive a car. It's one of the many reasons that all vital traffic signs are different shapes and colors. Some even have pictures. You learn about this in Driver's Ed. People with severe dyslexia can drive. People that don't speak English are allowed to drive in the US. It's the same thing. Traffic lights are color coded. Someone who can't read may get lost a lot but they will still understand all the signs that are considered important.

I don't know what's up with her eye problem but if she's really "slow" she shouldn't be driving! I honestly don't know how anyone who is fully illiterate AND intellectually disabled could ever pass the written portion of the driving exam anyway.

No, probably not. However, depending on her age and when she got her license, reading and writing may not have been a requirement. Way back when, all you needed to be able to do to drive was 'see' and drive the wagon around a bit to prove you could.

DOL shouldn't have given her a license.
SHe shouldn't be allowed to drive but apparently some keeps letting her. Maybe she doesn't have anyone that can drive her around. Would you drive her around?? My mom has cataracts and I drive her around on the weekends, just cause she used to drive me everywhere when I was little.
That's sad though, about the lady :(

If she is driving, I question whether she is driving legally - especially with known vision problems and 'slowness' makes me wonder if she comprehends street signs and her surroundings when behind the wheel.

NO. It is not offensive. If someone is not able to drive, they need not be on the road.

No. If she can't read, then she shouldn't be driving because she won't be able to read the signs!

Ofcorse she should be driving!!!!!!!! Since she's cross-eyed she can look in two different directions at once which would help her be a better driver on the road. Although she wouldn't be able to see in front of her, at least she can see on the sides of her.
