There are numerous writer's guidelines on-line. Some publishers specify the type and size of font to use (e.g. courier new 12 or times roman 12). Unless you plan to self-publish you should check with the publisher you hope to use.
You may also want to investigate software that formats your story for you.
There are tons of on-line helps available. I have listed three.
If you can't decide which font to use, don't worry yet. Just write. You can easily change the formatting once your novel is complete. Good luck!

The most universally used font in the industry is Courier New, 12 pt. Set your lines at 25 per page.
Verdana, Arial, etc are NOT used when doing submissions with agents or editors.

Well, a pretty good font would be Typewriter if you want aesthetic affect... If you just want legibility, I'd go with Lucida Grande, 11.5 size. It's the font that Microsoft Word uses.

Don't use anything scripty. Something straightforward, big, and easy to read like Courier, Times New Roman, or Arial would be best. If the type is hard to read, then no one will bother reading your book.
