Do you know how to fart?
I mean, fair enough you get that feeling of building up pressure in your rectum and then the question is: "Should I let this out slowly and discreetly or should I go for the big loud one?".
But yeah you'd fart anyway even if you didn't know it. Alot of animals fart without thinking about it.
BUT, that does raise a philosophical question about the animal psyche.
Does a dog get that feeling and think "Oo, thats gonna be a smelly one, maybe I'll go somewhere else and let out discretely"
I think the answer there is probably almost always no.
But, if you were to train your dog not to fart when its in the same room as you, it would have to have the ability to know how to or how not to fart.
I like your question.
Yes, some of them know how to fart.

Both my dogs and my cats fart. I don't know what's worse, a human fart or a dog fart.

yes, they fart as we do. they may not know how but they just fart. there are gas forming bacteria in their stomachs too that would cause them to fart.

of course, its a natural bodily function to rid you of extra gases, and animals need to do this as well

It comes natural to them, just like humans. No one taught you how to do it.
