The clipboard is what's called a meta file. It's not a real file, but a section of memory. Whenever you do a copy->paste, that's where the clipboard is. If you open a .doc file and paste, whatever's on the clipboard goes into the word doc.

clipboard is temporary space used when you do a cut/paste. it's not physically accessable
