Buy the new toilet. Toilets are like 1000 piece jigsaw puzzles - no other pieces but the one that belongs with it will ever fit right. as for the new toilet, 200.00 is way too expensive, unless it wipes for you. you can get the entire kit (tank, bowl, bolts, wax ring, guts, seat, and bolt caps) for around 100.00. Try shoping at this site, i used to work for this company. www.doitbest.com it is called a jon-in a-box. you can probably put it in yourself. it is not hard. a plumber will probably charge you around $300-500 for the job. *caution* if you do it yourself, then be prepared to mess it up. sometimes toilets must be shimmed to set properly and not wiggle when you sit on it.

Wow... what a pain.
Yes, tanks are pretty expensive. But worse, it is hard to match the existing "throne"!
Shop around, there are alot of good deals. I got a full kit (tank, bowl, bolts & flange gasket) from Home Depot for about $120.
Another inexpensive option is to use your local Re-Store (run by Habitat for Humanity). They carry a wide range of used hardware (including toilets) for not bad prices (haggle with them because some of their prices are wacked).
Canadian Tire has some good prices too.
I've included a couple links below for Re-stores in the TO area and the Crappy Tire link for toilets.
Good luck!

1st off the landlord should have paid to fix the running toilet it is in his building if it is rental the landlord would be interested in you having to pay the not so super to fix things
unless you own the apartment then you are responsible
if i he ire someone to fix something for me and he breaks something else in the process he is responsible for replacing / fixing it
and yes it can be a real sh itty job

the super should pay for this. otherwise i would buy an entire new unit. you gotta have some friends that can help you instead of hiring a plumber. it's not that hard to do. good luck.
