First of all, sorry to hear about the accident. But I think you hit the nail right on the head, when you said EX-FRIENDS. With friends like that, you sure don't need enemies. You can always pick your friends, so go out there and get some real friends, and tell your ex-friends good-bye, and there are plenty of ways to get attention if that was what you wanted. ps...........I don't know anybody that would do that to themselves, on purpose.

I'm so sorry you're going through this! Recuperation's tough enough without enduring the "witty" comments of bystanders.

What you shouldn't do (although I understand the temptation) is let them see you getting upset - people will assume they're hitting too close to the mark, and that's why you're reacting. There are several approaches (that I can think of):

> Frosty silence. You simply look at them with a surprised expression, then sadly shake your head. Then leave, or change the subject. This is the "you are drooling on yourself, but I won't be impolite enough to mention it" approach.

> "You know, that never occurred to me. I find it interesting that you think anyone would be desperate enough for attention to cut off fingers. It's interesting that you think that way."

> "I can't believe you said that. It must be terrible not to be able to control what you say like that."

> "Goodbye."

If they are ex friends, why do you feel the need to explain yourself to them?

Move on.

They are your ex-friends not a lot of explanation to them.

What really matters is that you know the truth. Obviously, they're not your friends, so don't worry about what they think.
