I prefer the real ones as the smell of them makes it feel so much like Christmas and sets the mood but with being disabled, i have to get the artificial ones as it is easier for me to handle. Artificial ones can be made to look very nice also.

Real trees are great but messy. Artificial trees are the way to go. They make artificial ones that look just like real ones.

Always go for the real one. Christmas just isn't right without the smell of the fresh tree in the house

Artificial. OR buy a real tree with a root system in place so you can plant it after the holiday. That would be proactive.

Artificial. You won't get bits on your floor, costs less money in the long run, and you have the warm glow of knowing (in a similar manner to Phoebe from Friends) you have saved the life of a tree this christmas!

artificial. The real pines drop after some time and you end up sweeping them all the year round. Its amazing how you keep finding them months after Christmas.

I suppose there are benefits and drawbacks to both. I'll list them, and you decide...
a Real Tree:
benefits--nice smell, traditional, looks pretty authentic
drawbacks--needles everywhere, it's more difficult to transport, it dries out and can pose a fire hazard, it eventually needs to be thrown away (unless you somehow figure out how to plant it in your livingroom)
an Artificial Tree:
benefits--it's easy to transport, no needles everywhere, it doesn't ever 'die,' so you can use it again and again, I think it comes in different colors, so you could theoretically get a purple one (if you were so inclined)
drawbacks--assembly might prove difficult, it doesn't look 'authentic,' if it's of shoddy construction, it might come apart

Definately a real one, you can't beat the smell from a real tree and getting it indoors and needles going everywhere is all part of getting the christmas spirit!

Get a live potted evergreen tree and then plant it outdoors after Christmas. Keep the planet green. You get all the benefits of a live tree and then do your civic duty by planting a tree later.
