Where do you think they come from?
Many are ex-military, or their family's history has politicians
listed as their occupations, and remember many of them are attorneys-at -law to start their careers with after graduating from law school and passing the bar examination that is pertinent to the state they live in.
Some of them practice corporate law, family law, entertainment
law, matrimonial law, patents and copyrights, tax law, insurance
law, estate, and real estate law, etc.
Go to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2006 oublished by the Government Printing Office for some real breakdowns
of legal careers and occupations.
Now, some do not come from law backgrounds and find the urge to run for office usually in their home districts, make that office,
go for state office, make that one, go for federal office, and if they have enough money in their warchest, they go out on active
campaigning, whistle-stops, all-media events, TV spots, radio
spots, newspapers, magazines, and of course the Internet, the
21st century way of spreading the word.(information superhighway)
Not all politicians are bad, some are even honest (unless you offer them a lot of money) many of them have wives and families
and are genuinely committed to representing their constituents
in and honest, fair and reasonable manner.
I know it sounds hokey, but they still exist, thank God.
Then there are all the politicians who are prevaricators, equivicators, sophists, and outright liars, who thrive on
making all the rest of us suffer, while they go on sabbatical
or retreat, and enjoy their palatial estates in Italy, basking under the Tuscan sun.
Unfortunately our form of government (constitutional republic)
allows this type of characterizations to go on in the halls of Congress, but that doesn't it make right.
So, it must be said if we can get substantive forms of government to manage us, we will be doing better than 75%
on average, when compared to other world governments,
especially in the longevity department.
Thats my message, good luck

A lot of folks would think from under rocks and out of cesspools.
Most begin their careers as lawyers (see above), but have well-meaning ideals, thinking they can make a difference. By the time they get to the national level, they have become disillusioned and self-serving.
