Or was he just a self-proclaimed king?

Everybody knows that Jesus Christ was the true king and His kingdom shall never be destroyed (Daniel 2:44).

Your right. But he was officially named by the United States government under Richard Nixon as a Special Agent at Large.

"In the '70s he was a strong supporter of Republican President Richard Nixon and even met him in the White House. In a letter that Presley wrote to Nixon, requesting that they should meet, Presley told the President he was a huge admirer of everything he was doing, and asked to be made a "Federal Agent at Large" in order to help get the country off drugs. Nixon duly made Presley a "Federal Agent at large" in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, presenting him with the appropriate badge. Extraordinarily, Presley was likewise able to present Nixon with a gift of a Colt .45 handgun in the Oval Office. Although it probably has no relevance to his political beliefs, Elvis also met future President George H.W. Bush at an awards banquet."
