I have a BA in English. While you can write two or three sentences for your thesis, this length should be only for papers that are 7 or more pages.
Thesis for a basic 3-5 page paper should be one sentence. You're supposed to be able to tell someone in one sentence what your paper is about and what stance you take.
A good thesis contains a specific subject / issue and your position.
i.e. Eating a well balanced diet is essential to maintaining good health.
Subject = good health
Position = eating a well balanced diet is essential

If you're in K-12, then your teacher probably is looking for one sentence. In reality, though, a thesis need not be just one sentence.
A thesis communicates the main idea of a paper so that readers know what to expect and can understand your argument thoroughly. That's the purpose.

A thesis statement is just a section to set up your analysis on your topic. Like a paper it is much like an introduction. You just put a beginning to your thoughts on a thesis. It can be more than one sentecne, but remember it is a setup, so it should not be to long, but long enough to get the point across.

yes!! and it should always come at the end of your introductory paragrah!! the thesis statment tell what you are going to talk about in you paper and should not include...."what my paper is about" or "i am going to talk about"....nothing along those line. i just finished a paper and this is what my thesis statement was...
"In his classic love story, Shakespeare pokes fun at love relationships by manipulating couples in a world of magic and fairies; he exposes the spoof through variations of settings, characters, and other literary tools." and this was approved by my teacher!!!

It can be one sentence but sometimes it can also be longer (for example, 2 or 3 sentences). So it depends on your position or what kind of paper you intend to write.

a thesis is basically a summary so it can be as long as you want it to be but don't make it more than a paragraph long

if i remember correctly... a thesis statement should be about one sentence, just as long as it has your main point...and you restate it in your conclusion you should be good to go.

It can be or it can be more than that. IT just is supposed to contain the main idea of the essay.
