Why do you need to know?
Does it really matter to you? Why? Are you interested in him?
Afraid that by coming onto him, that you'll be out, where you might not want to be out?
The question is very vague. Give us alittle more to go on, and we'll see.

If you don't want to ask him outright, then you're going to have to either spy on him in the hopes of catching him in a sexual act, or talk to everyone you suspect he might have been intimate with. Ask around at gay venues and to openly gay people in the community if he's been hanging around. Because that's the only way you're going to find out.
All the stereotypes in the world won't tell you nothing except that he fits a stereotype and might be or might not. The best gaydar can still be wrong.
Seriously, ask. It isn't that hard.

The only accurate, mature, intelligent way is by asking. Honestly if you are not comfortable talking to him then there is no reason to even worry about him. You are either a man or a mouse.

Bend him over and go to work. If he doesn't complain, I think you have your answer.
