Look at costuming books available in the library. Both wore nightshirs or night gowns of sorts, usually white, cotton.

I agree , long white cotton gowns with a bed cap/bonnet to protect the hair from bedbugs. That's why the gowns covered everything...

Long nighties made of cotton with usually a high neck and long sleeves, enbroidered, ruffled etc. That was rich girls - poor ones probably slept in their petticoats or whatever.

I would say long cotton gowns, down to the ankles. White in color, some may have been laced intricately? Some may have had long long-sleeves with puffing.
