Didn't you ever watch Donald Duck in Math-a-Magic land? Pythagoras opened the idea of octaves using a plucked string (like a lyre).

Pythagoric schools taught music among other things. Once i read that they were able to distinguish 1/64 variation of a note. Which means they were very tuned among other things.
This study of music lead to the music scale which we use today.
