Parties do have the ability to work together, sometimes it is better if they do so they come up with compromised answers that appeal to more people.

Checks and Balances. No one party has control of both Congress and the White House, so they can't push their political agenda through.

Either they need to work together and compromise, or nothing will get done. If nothing gets done, people in the middle will start to wonder they voted for the Dems. If they work together, I think it could turn out to be a great 2 years (until the Presidential election).

Gridlock and Deadlock, but if they work together they can accomplish something, but the Congress has all of the real constitutional power, but the president has so much influence it dwarfs that power.
