Most states have rules that define alimony (spousal support) based on relative incomes, duration of the marriage, and other factors.

The waiver is a contractual agreement, usually made before marriage, that one spouse will not seek or accept alimony. That voluntary contractual waiver overrides the default alimony rules.

Note that alimony is entirely different than child support. Alimony is spousal support, and is the right of the spouse. Child support is the right of the child, and therefore cannot be waived.
