Not to put too fine a point on it, but it was Clinton's overreaching on health care that helped the Republicans return to power in Congress in '94 (corruption, overconfidence, and stupidity didn't help them either). The Clinton years were good for the Clintons, but not all that great for the party.
In all fairness, I would put the campaign period as better than the actually election. Schumer and Emmanuel did an excellent job of building a new Democratic coalition, trying to find candidates that actually represented their districts well, rather than candidates that fit a narrow ideological scope (like...oh...the Republicans).
They publically supported Lamont without actually giving him a lot of support, helping Lieberman to win (granted, Lamont was Lieberman's greatest ally in the campaign) and make a statement that holding the center is more important than getting the "base" and more important than seeking an ideologue.
While the Republicans tried to paint the party as not having a unified message, in actuality, the Democrats' lack of a unified message helped them greatly - it allowed each candidate to express (or avoid) their opinions on issues as they felt free, it let them be flexible.
Whether the actual election win is the greatest day for the party is up to Pelosi and Reid - Schumer and Emmanuel got them the gavel, now they have to use it wisely.
One more point: Don't get over-excited about the Dems controlling Congress. Anything they do has to either appeal to a few Republicans, or the 15-20 conservative/moderate Democrats that are the difference between controlling the chamber and not controlling the chamber - and those 15-20 swing votes generally had narrow wins, and will not go too far off on a limb lest it just mean they get beaten in '08.

I feel relieved that the Dems have the House and the Senate. I think a very strong message was sent to the White House. However, don't assume this magical change is going to happen over night.
Remember, it is up to the PEOPLE to ensure that this much needed change happens. Hold your representatives accountable and keep an eye on what is going on within your own states. Contact your Senators, Congressmen, Representatives...when you don't agree with something and make sure your voice is heard.
It's time for all Americans (not just Dems) to take this country back!!!

lol -- don't move so fast -- while i have nothing but respect for pelosi she isn't exactly a deity sent from heaven to save us all. its time to activate which means everyone needs to get out and work to make sure nonsense like the last 6 yrs never happens again. the tides of the united states are changing -- generation y (whatever you wish to call it) is 5 times the size of gen x. that's a big huge new political power coming on the scene that can devastate the old curmudgeons that think bombing mosques is good because towel heads are godless heathens. gen y can now swing an election. the children are our future -- literally. teach them well.

congrats. if you think it is a win. tell me now. what are you going to do that is so much better. if the republicans are wrong, atleast they agree. the dems can't not even agree with each other. they have no idea on what they are going to do. you still have to be able to wrok together to make it successful and they aren't. And the clinton era wasn't much better. even durning his time the US was the laughing stock of the world. a Pres who lied on the stand. who took an oath in our court and cheated on his wife. if he is the best thing the dems can come up with you all need help.

Yes, greatest days since the Clinton era, but that's not saying much. The days have all been bad for Democrats since Clinton left office.

I'd say yes, but remember that the House and Senate usually change hands at the mid-term election of a President's second term, so don't crow too loud.

Considering the D's have had no good days since Bush was elected in 2000, these being the greatest two days is not much of a stretch!
Plus learn to spell (or type).
