No. In August 1995, he -attempted- suicide with a razor blade; he later stated that this was more of a "cry for help", rather than a suicide attempt.
He was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Beverly Hills, California and released shortly after. On May 28th 1996, he overdosed on a heroin and cocaine 'speedball' in a Los Angeles hotel room. He was found clinically dead and successfully revived by paramedics, then again taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was arrested upon his release two days later, and ordered by the court to complete a 9 month rehabilitation. The drug charges against him were eventually dropped in September 1996, and he has now been clean for 10 years. Amanda De Cadenet is one of the people he credits with helping him make that climactic step towards sobriety.

Nope. He did cut his wrist a few years back, but he didn't die. You might be thinking of the singer from INXS.

I've met him twice. Once in '97 and then again last year and I saw them live twice this year so he's definately still alive

No he just became a HUGE drug addict and got out of it and he's been clean ever since, he just kinda disapeared for a minute.
