He was offered the opportunity to resign, rather than be fired. Bush grew a spine and did this over Cheney's objection.
My esteem grew for our president, ever so slightly.

What difference does it make? You think that Rumfeld has no say anymore? Of course he does, this is just politics, keep the public happy and make it look like you're doing something.
Anyway, Bush would never fire him then he'd look disloyal (not nice, what a back stabber etc.) as well as incompetent for believing in him in the first place then changing his mind.
No, much better to get him to resign but keep him on really.
Anyway, who's really running things? Not those two probably though Rumsfeld might well have a lot more real power than Bush he certainly appears to be a lot more intelligent evil incarnate that he is.

President George W. Bush decided before Tuesday's mid-term elections to fire Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld but lied, once again, to the press and the American people about his intentions. Bush admitted Wednesday that he interviewed former CIA director Robert M. Gates over the weekend for Rumsfeld's job and said he intentionally misled reporters last week about the defense secretary's future to avoid making the Iraq war more of an issue in the election. More of an issue? The Iraq war, and Bush's mishandling of it, was the issue in Tuesday's rout that swept Democrats back into power in both the House and Senate. Once again, Bush proved himself unaware of the obvious and oblivious to the voter anger that sent Republicans packing. He blamed GOP losses on voter ignorance, saying Americans didn't understand the war in Iraq . He chastised political guru Karl Rove, saying "I obviously was working harder in the campaign than he was." He later would claim the line was a joke but it wasn't. Bush was clearly pissed at everyone involved in Tuesday's election debacle. Everyone but himself

Donald Rumsfeld has provided his resignation to the President on 3 diverse occassions. The President refused to settle for his resignation. it doesn't count number what congress needs - as Mr. Rusmfeld is a member of his crew, and doesn't artwork for congress. because the President received't settle for his resignation, it isn't going he might want to then fireplace him. purely is going to instruct that Mr. Rumsfeld is familiar with he has screwed the proverbial pooch, yet President Bush doesn't favor to confess it, so we proceed without replace and a good number of hypothesis which does not do us any solid.

I think that he was fired. If the Dems hadn't gained control of both the Senate and House, Rumsfeld would not have been fired. Either way, him being out of a job is a good thing for our troops.

Fired! Sort of!
I suspect that when any person is given that type of job in government, he gives the president a resignation with no date! The president just fills in the date! I don't know in this case, except he was fired no matter which way you put it!

The official story is he resigned and that's probably technically true. But if your boss strongly suggests that you resign, which is what I think happened, then for all intents and purposes you've been fired.

Lol. I would be afraid to fire him personally. His eyes look like they could shoot death rays.
Is Bush even allowed to fire anyone? Maybe him and Cheney got into a fight because Rumsfeld was like I am so not going hunting with you remember last time and Cheney was like thats it stop saying no to me. your fired.

He was asked to resign. Technically he was fired. I just learned that cabinent members actually turn in an unsigned resignation when they are hired.
