Yes! It is proven that it is easier for a child to learn a second language than it is an adult. I just learnt that in my psychology class - there is a part of the brain that is used in children for language learning that does not show use in adults on MRI's done for brain activity while learning language.

I am trying to learn French now that I am an adult and it is affecting my career (the area I live in is considered bilingual so i need to have both languages even though I don't use French very much in my job!). I see so many around me that are perfectly bilingual because they learnt it at such a young age. I wish I would have learnt it younger because it is so hard now and I just don't have the time to devote to it that I should!

It never hurts for a child to learn a second language. It will always be an asset to know more than one so why not start them while they're young?

Yes, language is most easily learned while the child is young and their brains can accept thinking in other languages. As we get older we have a tendency to look at an object and translate instead of recognizing it by its name in a language. Childrens brains can accept that challenge much more easily. While they are "picking up" english they can easily pick up spanish, german, french or whatever language the school offers.

The standard theory in English as a Second Language indicates you need to be taught in your first language, and can thenbegin a second safely at about 6 years of age, a third after you've mastered these to some degree wth speaking, listening, reading and writing, at about thirteen or fourteen.

Think about this....many kids take second language courses on the weekend in the language of their ethnic culture. I also had teachers that taught us some Spanish in 3rd grade, it gave me a hunger to learn more.

If we give a child the opportunity to be bi-, tri- or even more...lingual, they will have a huge advantage over most all of their peers.
