Vitamin C in the form of either supplements or oranges is good.

Hello
Vitamin C - lots of it - colds cant survive in a vitamin C rich environment - Patrick Holford recommends 2000mg a day I think but I always take a few thousand mg a day when I have a cold.
Lots of water - 1.5 to 2 litres.
Echninachea - great stuff for immune system but only take in short bursts a week or two at a time rather than constantly.
Also the homeopathic remedy Ferrum Phos is great - it oxygenates your blood - you can take this every half an hour when you symptoms are acute as directed on bottle.
Taking a warm bath with a few drops of Majoram essential oil is also very helpful and has been used since Roman times for the relief of colds and chills.
If you are having problems sleeping aswell - a couple of drops of Vetiver in a warm bath before bed will help along with taking some Valerian tincture.
St Johns Wort - anti-viral and lifts your mood.
Regular rest also very important. Health Guru Leslie Kenton wrote in one of her books that she kept having colds even when her diet was excellent and she took all the right supplements - the only thing that stopped them was when she began taking a day off to spend in bed resting every so often - then she stopped getting them.
Hope this helps : )

I'm not a great believer in drugs, even the Vitamin C recommendations coming up here as answers, but I find that if I do the following then colds either go or stay under control quite quickly:
1) reduce the symptoms - aspirin (an exception to my drug rule) achieves this, as does wrapping up warm and taking care
2) fresh air and exercise - go for a run or play rugby with your local team; I currently use a cross trainer in an unheated room with the window open
3) really believe that what you are doing to tackle the problem will work - this is true whatever the problem, not just getting a cold

A good remedy for a cold is hot water honey and a squeeze of lemon does the cold a world of good and is cheaper than paying out for cold remedies

I drink hot ribena for a sore throat (also has lots of vit C) and whisky before bed is a pretty good way of getting some decent shut eye (sometimes as a hot toddy with hot water and sugar). For blocked noses, just inhale eucalyptus oil in a bowl of steamy hot water. OK, so most of this is quite old fashioned, but if you let a cold run its course then you will have just boosted your immune system against a lot of other more serious nasties - just as nature intended.

It's an old one but it works.

Peel and cut a Spanish onion in half. In a cereal bowl put in a tablespoon of sugar and place the onion cut side down in the sugar, cover and leave overnight. In the morning there will be about 2 tablespoons of juice in the bottom of the bowl, drink this. It has a slight onion taste, but tastes more like a sugar syrup. Place more sugar in the bowl and repeat. Will last for about 3 days, in that time your cold will be gone.

Also, if you want, take a paracetamol with hot lemon and honey, and drink pure orange juice.

I didn't believe my mum when she told me about this, but I tried it and was amazed when it did work. No need to buy expensive cough medicines when natural ones are cheaper and better for you.

To be honest at the moment there isn`t a cure for the common cold, it is worth it running it`s course, many remedies just prolong the inevitable, a cold is one way your body gets rid of all impurities that have built up over time,to ease the wretched headache two Asprin & bed with bottle drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquid & eat sensible.

drink plenty of fluids, water preferably, rest lots - no late nights, you can take supplements such as vitamin c and ecinacea. or try eating foods naturally high in vitamin c such as oranges r drinking fruit juices - but only naturally squeezed ones and not from concentrate etc. also you could try nasal spays if you are very bunged up and blowing your nose all the time. a good natural anti-septic one is sterimar - which is basically pressurised salt water. if your eyes are streaming try a cooling mask to at least try and soothe them slightly.
for a sore throat i always found that hot water with honey and/or lemon helps alot. and you can always add honey to black tea instead of sugar when you have a sore throat.
hope this helps.its always what i do when i have a cold - or cold like bug.

Yes, try Echinacea, it is a herb that helps boost the immune system. I have been taking them for more than six years, I used to have bronchitis every year of weeks on end but I have not even had a cold for five years. I took them as directed for three weeks then cut down to one or two a day, now I only need to take them occasionally. You can get them from Holland & Barretts but you must remember they may not work on everyone and you must give them time to work as they are more of a proventative then a cure. Exta Vitim c has not been proven to work according to the midical Journal

Hi poppy
If possible then go to bed and keep warm, do not take lemsip etc, these so called remedies contain paracetamol which lower your body temperature, when the body needs to stay hot to help the white blood cells fight the virus, do not drink alchohol either as it has the same effect.Hot drinks like milk and honey are better. If you are running a very high temperature consult your doctor. Get well soon.

the best way to get rid of a cold is to swet it out so go to a sauna, or you can get a boiling hot bowl of water and dangle your head over it and put a towel over you and the bowl to contain the heat do this for about half an hour and then your cold should be gone.
oh ye if you have any karvol put some of that in the bowl and then it should only take 15 to 20 mins.
