Sometimes theres no gentle way to do it. Tell him he smells and its very unpleasant for everyone around him. he probably cant smell it any more.

Hmmm...this is always hard, but with an offending odor, something has to be done. Since you are a relative, you can always speak open and honestly. One thing you can try that we did to my brother is put down a cloth to cover the bottom of the seat. Sometimes people have these down anyway to protect the fabric of the furniture (in the '70's, some people were using plastic to protect the furniture - lol!). After my brother got up to do something, we removed the cloth and someone else was sitting in the chair. He sat elsewhere and we just gave him the cloth, to which, he smelled it and said, "Hey, that stinks!" My one brother said, "Yeah, that's you, man. Now, go take a bath - we're tired of that stench."

Of course, that's rude but my brothers are like that. So, my younger brother did get the hint and bath time was added to his almost weekly routine.

A long story to say one thing: Take him aside and let him know that his odor is not pleasant and it would be great if he could fix that before someone else caught it and was offended.

One more thing - we had a friend we used to play with - or hang around with - and he was so stinky - very musty. No one said a thing to him; we discussed it amongst ourselves but no one had the nerve to tell him. At least not us. One day, he wasn't stinking. He reprimanded US for not telling him that he stunk! Go figure!

buy him some bodywash like tag or something and get him plenty of deodorant and make him use it before he sits in your moms chair.
