There are two ways to do this.
1. Plug the headphones into your speakers. This will mute the speakers.
2. If you have speakers without a headphone jack, or you have no speakers, plug them into the back of your computer. The jack should be spring green on most PCs.

Have they ever worked? Try these:
1. Look on the back of the computer, an Emachines should have three plugs on the soundcard. They will be Green (Output), Blue (Input), and Red (Mic). The green one is where you will plug in your headphones. Try and alternate pair to make sure it is not a dead pair of headphones.

2. Go into Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices. Double click. On the "Volume" tab, make sure all you volume sliders are turned all the way up and that all the "Mute" boxes are UNCHECKED. Click OK.

3. Download and install the newest sound drivers from the Emachines website. Reboot the machine.
