I am not even sure if the term welfare is considered "politically correct". If there is a more accepted term for it these days? Is it the same as government assistance? Thank you in advance for answers to any or all of my questions.

I looked at this recently, see links below for some stats and a decent overview of changes to welfare (aka AFDC and now TANF). those changes happened during the Clinton administration with a Republican led congress to change welfare.

As of March 01 (latest stats from the gov. site) about 5.48 MM people were on welfare. That's roughly 2% of the poplation assuming 250MM people in 2001-- not sure what population actually was back then.

Sorry shelley but public education is not welfare.

I would have to agree with Kathleen H's answer all the way, but add a few lazy whites in there as well as a few Asians who know how to "work" our system and get something for nothing.

Then that last group goes home to 'their' country for 6-11 months out of the year _every year_. How else can they afford expensive cars when 60% of them do country swapping year in and year out? Ask an Asian person who can speak understandable English if they know anyone like that, and _if they are honest_, be ready for a surprise.

Now what they DO in their country remains a mystery to me. However, you can bet your LIFE it involves making money in some way. Importing would be just one likely guess.

The figures are astronomical. Welfare comes in many, many forms, not just food stamps and health care. Welfare is any form of government "hand out." Such as public education, Pell grants for college, etc. Probably the worst offenders in regards to accepting welfare would be corporate America!

I wonder how many states have "workfare," where they make the recipients do some sort of work in order to receive benefits...? This is the best thing yet, as far as I can see...
