As with many things, you can choke on them if you put them in your mouth or try to eat them. It's dangerous.

They do contain napthalene, but I have worked with that several times throughout my university level studies in chemistry, and look how I turned out. One person in my class actually felt sick from it, but she lived.

I think it will be okay if your friend only visits every once in a while; then you won't need to deal with it all of the time. However, if he tries to move in, make him get rid of the mothballs and wash his clothes with a lot of soap.

They are poisonous to pets
Although many people use them to deter them, not all of them are deterred by them. They cause a terrible hemorrhaging death.

Mothballs contain naphthalene, which is a poison if inhaled. Mothballs can cause nausea, vomiting and headache. Other signs of illness are shortness of breath, coughing and burning eyes.

They can cause headaches and nausea. I read that they can also cause cancer. You should suggest they use cedar blocks instead.
