No you should not have a period that lasts for six weeks ever not even after birth. You may have a week of light bleeding but if it heavy are lasts a long time there is a risk of infection and retained products most likely part of the placenta was not delivered.

It all depends on the individual- regular delivery or C-section, breastfeeding or bottle feeding. With my first, I went for 5-6 days, then spotted for 5 weeks. (tough when you are allergic to sanitary supplies). I had trouble with my stitches healing. With my second, I went for a week and then I didn't even feel like I had a baby! I didn't have regular period with either of them until after I stopped nursing for 3-5 weeks.
Just remember, everyone is different.

it's not really a period, it's just bleeding and yes it can last that long. I bled for 5 weeks after having my son. In the begining it was rather heavy. They usually give you special sanitary pads in the hospital and then as time goes on it slacks off. Then your regular periods will start shortly after depending if you are breastfeeding or not.

Every woman's blood flow will be different after delivery. I noticed with my sisters and myself, the ones of us who had heavier menstrual cycles, bleed more after the deliveries of our children. For instance: my normal cycle for a regular period is 3-days and I bleed for exactly 1-week after delivery but one of my sisters who usually has a 7-day cycle bled for 4-5 weeks. Not to say that is any way accurate to your personal delivery but it will help you get an idea of what could happen. I look at it like this, no matter how much you bleed after the birth, that precious baby will keep your mind off of all the normal torture we go through during our monthly cycle.

It's not a period, it's just post-birth bleeding, and yes, that's normal. You've just expelled a child and placenta. It takes a while for your body to heal.
When we were teens my best friend's mom tried to tell us (as a means of birth control, I'm sure) that after you had a baby, you had your period for a year to make up for the ones that you missed while you were pregnant. That put the fear of God into us for a while...lol.

Yes - mine did for both of my kids. But, it's not like a full-blown period. It's just mild bleeding, some days off and on. It'll be pretty heavy for the first week or so, but nothing major from then on.

Mine lasted about 6 weeks, really heavy at first but then lightened up and was more of a nuisance than anything.

Mine stopped the day before my six week check-up. But the last 2 weeks or so was just a bit heavier than spotting.

Actually for some women, it can last for 6 wks. Known as lochia, this 'period' thins until it actually stops sometimes 6wks later. In some cultures, they take herbal concotions to induce this bleeding since it is beleived that the bleeding should last that long.
