We wear red poppy to remember the men who gave their lives in the line of duty during WW1. So many died they bled the ground red. Then a cease fire came in to effect - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month - we now mark that day that peace came and remember the many men who died by wearing the red poppy as they grew all over the battlefield of the Somme were so many died.

The battle of the Somme had huge casualties, and by buying your poppy, the money goes to help those who still suffer from the effects of war.

So yes the colour does matter because it represents a part of history.

All the answers have been well off the mark.

The UK's white poppy is not new. It has been made every year since 1933. It is supposed to represents two things: (1) all people who died as a result of war (including non-combatants) and (2) a wish for peaceful resolution of international disputes. The white poppy is produced by the Peace Pledge Union, which offers it as an alternative poppy for pacifists to wear. The suggestion that it will offend African Caribbeans is risible, as is the idea that it symbolises cowardice (that's a white feather).

YES of course it matters!!

As soon as you see a RED poppy, you remember the time of year, which then reminds you why these are being sold and what they signify.

By changing the colour you are removing the significance of the poppy!!!

I have just read on Yahoo news that the white poppy is for Christians to wear. As it signifies peace.

The red poppy is for all to wear, when you wear the red poppy it unites everyone, as it reminds you of all the sacrifices that have been made for us to have the life we have today. I do not think that the colour should be changed.

Yes it matters!
The RED POPPY symbolises TWO things.
It is the colour of the Poppies that grew in the Fields Of FLANDERS where SO MANY DIED (On Both sides)
It is the Colour Of BLOOD and in WARS BLOOD IS SHED!
As Rememberance Day is to Honour All Who Die in service to their Country and remind us of the cost (Of our Freedoms)in lives lost what Better COLOUR could we use.
War is always with us!!! Changing the colour wont change that.
Not every person who wears a Poppy is a Christian!!!!! I'm not!
I wear the RED with pride! I'm Atheist an Ex-Servicemans wife, Who lost Friends in both Ireland and The Falklands and As my husband could easily have been to either it reminds me HOW LUCKY I WAS!!!
There is also the problem of PC here. Wear WHITE offend the BLACKS who died too! Wear BLACK offend the WHITES. We could maybe try Yellow but it is the Buddist Colour of Spirituallism so Might be Offended if they thought it Glorified War!!

Christians are not the only ones who Die in our wars!!! White is not a Universal Symbol of Peace But All Mankind KNOWS the colour of BLOOD! It is the reason it became recognised as a Symbol of Danger! And War is the Greatest Danger!!!!

It does if you consider that the battlefields were covered in red poppies after the battles, due to the earth being disturbed by the constant shelling.
The white poppy has no significance in this context.
Either way the red poppy is a sign of remembrance, and that is how it should remain.

The white poppy is an insult to the memory of the men who fought and died in the world wars. It is a symbol of appeasement and cowardice. The red poppy commemorates the poppies growing on Flander's fields the battlefield of WW1, and we old soldiers wear it with pride in memory of those who went before.

Is there such a thing as red and white poppies? That would be a good alternative.

The white symbolises peace
We wear the red one to remember those who fought and died in wars. So it does matter if you want want to remember. Also, the money raised for red one goes to injured servicemen!
