Vitamin A deficiency can cause infectious diseases (such as pneumonia and severe diarrhea) that kill as many as 2 million children each year. It can also cause Night Blindness (in which the person loses the ability to recover quickly from seeing darkness), total blindness, and Keratinization (an accumulation of keratin [the hard protein found in hair and nails] in a tissue) .

Vitamin A is essential to normal growth and to the health of mucous membranes and skin. Deficiency causes night blindness, and can aggravate boils, acne, dry flaky skin, rashes, dry itchy eyes, dry and brittle hair and nails, loss of appetite, and increased sensitivity to infections. Women should not take more than 5000 iu daily unless more is recommended by their doctor.
