Won't know the answer to that till the end of season five (or season seven, if it makes it that far). Though I get the feeling it'll either have a very surreal ending (in keeping with the flavour of the show), or a predictable tale of homeward bound survivors.
For what it's worth, season three just gets better and better. I loved the episode where --

I wasa working in LA earlier this year on a film shoot and got to talking to one of the producers of LOST. They actually make it up as they go along, he said that the end will be like a cross between Twin Peaks, Dynaasty and Farscape

I hate that show but i'm addicted. I loved it at the beginning but they don't provide enough answers each week. I feel like it's just drifting nowhere like the writers don't know where it's going themselves. they just keep writing it each week and see where it's going. according to the actors, they don't know week to week what's going to happen (top secret I guess.) I'm guessing that the mystery will be solved after the ratings start to drop. there's too many other great shows (Heroes!!!!!) on right now.

I think they are all in a sort of purgatory and when they account for their sins, like Mr. Eco finally did, then they are free from being earth bound. Even the one's that you think don't have a dark secret, do have one. I think that they are all being forced to remember and relive certain moments in time and now they have the opportunity to repent.

i hear they have enough "secrets" to last them another 2 seasons. well yeah, if they keep it as slow as it's going for sure they will.
i'm still dying to know what the explanation is to all those weird creatures on the island. and that black smoke like cloud thing that makes clicky snake noises. WHAT is that?!
